I Watched You As You Slowly Deteriorate (2019)
"Come Here, I Want to See You" - A phrase so simple, but luring at the same time. What is it we want to see? Something hidden under a mask? Perhaps, the 'real' you. This phrase gave me a lingering thought about how we present ourselves to the public. Especially, in a world where almost everyone uses technology, smartphones and social media to communicate and post about our daily lives. It has come to my attention that we rely heavily on media to express ourselves, to the point where this could lead to the creation of fake identities. This leads me to ask the question - How are we perceived by others through these mediated devices and means? Is it possible to have a digital self?
This film is shot and edited to resemble documentary footage and invites viewers to watch an unknown identity slowly deteriorate as their 'self' gets engulfed by technology and social media.
I must say, the internet is indeed very powerful.
It controls you.
It traps you.
It watches you, as you slowly deteriorate into thin air.
And this all happens in just a matter of seconds.
My life, turned into a complete disaster.
I was humiliated.
I was tortured.
I was suffocating from all the rumours and lies.
I didn’t want this.
But why?
Now, I’m sitting here in this room, speaking with all my heart.
This is who I am.
Why can’t you see me?
Why can’t you hear me?
The words coming from my mouth means nothing to you.
Do you really know me?
Do you really know who I am?
